Gabriela Watson-Burkett ('17) has won numerous awards for her work, including a 2019 Leeway Art and Change Grant; and a 2019 Lenfest NExt Generation Fund Recipient; among many others. She has experience as a Producer on Broadcast TV Journalism, documentaries, film festivals, and entertainment TV programs. She has worked as a Web Producer for WHYY, a Freelance Producer for WPVI-TV-6 ABC, and a professor of Digital Filmmaking and Latin American Cinema at Saint Joseph's University.
Her independent work focuses on social issues related to Afro-Brazilian identity, Afro-Latino Culture, African Diaspora and education. Her first documentary Nosotros, Afroperuanos (We, Afro-Peruvians) was screened in more than ten countries. Her project Baobab Flowers won the Audience Award for Favorite Documentary Short at BlackStar Film Festival and it is being screened in various film festivals.
