Summer Institutes and Intensives

Temple University’s Pre-college Summer Intensives and Institutes invite students entering grades 10, 11, or 12 to experience Temple University academics while exploring potential college majors through a full-day non-credit workshop in a particular topic. Students in a Summer Institute or Intensive will

  • attend one (1) full-day non-credit workshop
  • engage in an immersive curriculum in one academic field
  • build their confidence and sense of independence,
  • engage in interactive, project-based learning, and
  • make new friends and build community with other students from diverse backgrounds.

There are several Summer Institutes and Intensives offered throughout the summer. One-week sessions are offered for non-residential students only during the week of June 24. Two-week sessions are offered during the weeks of July 8 and 15, or during the weeks of July 22 and 29. All programs take place in person on Temple's Main Campus in Philadelphia.

Interactive, project-based classes.

Your program will be a mix of class sessions with your instructors, and time to work on your own or in a small group. Every workshop is designed to be as interactive as possible. Your non-credit workshops are designed to introduce you to the key concepts of various academic fields through project-based learning, often through work in small groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between an Institute/Intensive and Temple Pre-College Workshops?

While Summer Institutes and Intensives are topic-specific programs for high school students who want to focus intensely on one area of study, Pre-College Workshops allows students to mix and match classes to explore multiple interests. In either program, you will learn in small classes, alongside other high school students, from Temple faculty, graduate students, and staff, and you will get lots of support from our Temple student staff along the way. You will apply what you learn to real-world challenges, and leave with a better understanding of what you may want to study in college.

Summer Institutes and Intensives offer a one-week option or a two-week option, and requires full-day attendance. Pre-College Workshops are offered only in a two-week option, but half-day or full-day attendance is available.

How much does participating in a Summer Institute or Intensive cost?

Most Institutes or Intensives cost $850 per one-week session or $1,300 per two-week session. This fee covers one (1) non-credit workshop, lunch daily, ongoing mentorship and support from Temple undergraduate students, college knowledge seminars, and access to a robust schedule of evening and weekend social activities.

Are there any financial aid or scholarship opportunities?

Yes. You will need to fill out an additional page on your application to be considered for aid and scholarships.

Additional Program Information

Enrollment Requirements and Deadlines

Intensives and Institutes require an application to be admitted. We recommend for most of these programs that students have some experience in the subject matter, but it is not required. Click "Apply Now" to get started with your free application.

Application Deadline
Applications will now be accepted through March 15, 2024.

Notification of Acceptance
Students will be notified of an admissions decision two weeks after the deadine (i.e. March 1 for those who meet the early deadline and April 1 for those who meet the regular deadline). You will receive an email from  advising you of the admissions decision and what to do next.

Enrolling in the Program
Once you receive your acceptance, you are considered enrolled in the program when you pay your 10% deposit. A link for how to pay this deposit will be provided to you in your acceptance email. You may pay the remainder of your program fee in any installments that work for you and your family, provided you are paid in full by June 14, 2024.
